Quick and Easy Tips for Moving Your Storage Unit
A trip to the storage unit will never be on the top of anyone's list of fun things to do. Whether you're moving things in or out of storage, it's hard, time-consuming work but necessary for creating more space and keeping your items safe and secure. But if you aren't prepared, you could be in for a long day and sore muscles. Here are some tips to make moving in (or out) of your unit easier.
1. Choose Your Time Wisely.
Weekends are the busiest times for self-storage facilities because they're the most convenient. This can also make visiting your unit more challenging. Not only will you compete for parking, but also other moving resources like elevator space and handcarts. Try to get an early start, or schedule time during the week if you want a faster trip.
Don't forget to consider the time of year, too. In the summer, aim to visit in the morning or evening when it's cooler. If you're making a stop in the winter, try for the afternoon when it's warmest.
2. Wear Proper Clothing.
Moving is a workout, so dress like you're going to the gym. You want comfortable clothes that you can move around in and don't mind getting dirty. Look for breathable fabrics like cotton, bamboo, or rayon and avoid materials like nylon, spandex, and polyester. Always wear socks and closed-toed shoes.
3. Plan Out Your Route
Before you pick up that sofa and head towards your destination, take some time to learn the lay of the land. Are there any tight corners or narrow doorways? What is the fastest route to the elevator or exit? Is there an elevator? Where are you putting your items? These are important things to know before carrying large, heavy items.
4. Use the Right Equipment
Arms are good for carrying things, but plenty of other useful tools are at your disposal. Dollies and handcarts are good for moving items faster - just don't overload them. Moving straps and sliders are good for moving larger, bulkier items.
5. Drink Lots of Water
Staying hydrated is always essential, but even more so during physical activity. Moving is tough work, and drinking wanter throughout the day will help keep your energy levels up and aid your body in recovering afterward. Want to skip the sore muscles? Make sure to keep drinking!
6. Lift With Your Knees
This is standard advice when lifting or moving, and for good reason. Doing it wrong can cause serious harm to your body, such as muscle sprains, slipped discs, dislocated joints, or even muscle tears.
To lift safely, stand with your legs hip-width apart. Keep your back straight and bend your legs like a squat. Position the object at waist height and use your core to push through your legs. 7. Take Breaks
The temptation to power through a tough task is understandable, but you'll pay for it later and increase your risk of injury. For starters, plan out more time to move than you think you'll need, Do not squeeze in other time-sensitive tasks on the day of your move. You need time to rest. Take a seat, drink some water and stretch. It's not a race, and your things aren't going anywhere.
