However, long before it was ever a suburb of the nation’s largest city, Rockland was home to indigenous tribes, including the Lenape and Tappan. The Dutch colonized the area as New Netherland in the early 1600s before it came under British rule in 1664 and was renamed New York.

Rockland County Community

The history of Rockland County stretches back to Revolutionary times. The area was the site of two battles: the capture of the British Fort Clinton at Bear Mountain in 1777 and the Battle of Stony Point in 1779. George Washington held temporary headquarters at John Suffern’s tavern, where present-day Suffern now stands. Over in Tappan is the ’76 House, one of the longest operating bars in the States and a meeting place for Patriots during the Revolutionary War.

With such deep roots in American history, Rockland is home to numerous historical sites and museums telling some of the earliest parts of the nation’s history. The DeWint house in Tappan is the oldest in the county and now operates as a museum. The original building was constructed in 1700, and it was where George Washington met with Sir Guy Carleton to discuss a peace treaty and the removal of British troops from New York. At the Stony Point Battlefield Historic Site, visitors can see where Brigadier General “Mad” Anthony Wayne launched a surprise midnight attack on sleeping British troops.

Aside from its rich history, Rockland is also known for its beautiful parks and natural scenery. Approximately one-third of the county’s land is parkland, and the area is designated as a Preserve America Community. Two of the most popular parks are Bear Mountain State Park in the northwest and Nyack Beach State Park in the southeast. The region’s abundant open land has also given rise to a large and thriving golf scene.
