What’s the Weather Like in Jersey City, NJ?

Jersey City is in the northeastern part of New Jersey, where the Hudson River meets the Upper New York Bay. In fact, the border between New York and New Jersey runs right up the middle of the Hudson.

.Jersey City is also home to one of the most famous landmarks in the United States, which is widely believed to be in Manhattan: The Statue of Liberty. Yes, the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island is actually in Jersey.

Jersey City is situated on a low-lying peninsula that juts out into the Hudson River. Because it’s tucked in behind New York City, Jersey City is somewhat protected from some of the weather events that hit other parts of New Jersey and NYC.

Average Temperatures

Living in Jersey City, you need to be prepared for a range of weather over the year and you will definitely get all four seasons.

Winter months are considered to be from December to March. You’ll need warm clothing, sturdy boots and snow shovels and scrapers to survive a Jersey winter.

You will also find the winter is cloudy and overcast more than 50% of the time according to WeatherSpark.com. Jersey City averages about 26 inches of snow per year -- about the same as New York City but a little less than other parts of New Jersey that can see 41 inches.

(That doesn’t include nor’easters that arrive with a vengeance and leave a dump of snow in a short period of time.)

Spring is relatively mild, but it can be cloudy and overcast. Summer is hot and, with all that water around, it’s also sticky and humid. Once the leaves start to change in autumn, temperatures can start cool, turn warm, go back to cool, so layers and a light jacket are your best friends.

Hurricanes do make their way up the Atlantic every year, but Jersey City is tucked in behind New York City and doesn’t often get a direct hit. The year 2021 has been an exception to that, when Hurricane Ida barrelled through causing widespread flooding throughout the state, although Jersey City itself was spared the worst of it.

The more dangerous and common storm is a Nor’easter, a low pressure system that forms when colder air from Canada meets warm air coming up the Gulf of Mexico.

Nor’easters arrive with strong winds, heavy rain or snow, high tides, storm surge and serious attitude. In early 2021, a nor’easter dropped over almost 2 feet of snow over a couple of days. All you can do is hunker down and ride it out.
